"Sugar is evil" type of articles must get a lot of clicks.
I'm not saying you want to eat an all-sugar diet or binge on a pound of candy each night, but...
A bit of sugar in your diet is completely fine.
You wouldn't know that if you were scanning the internet.
I saw on Facebook a live Zoom meeting happening today.
Ridiculous.
I won't be watching the live presentation.
Anti-sugar stuff is all over...
I start my day with Flipboard, which curates news based on topics I like.
Here is the first article that popped up for me this morning.
Sugar addiction is not a real thing, according to the most recent studies:
Sugar addiction: the state of the science
We find little evidence to support sugar addiction in humans, and findings from the animal literature suggest that addiction-like behaviours, such as bingeing, occur only in the context of intermittent access to sugar. These behaviours likely arise from intermittent access to sweet tasting or highly palatable foods, not the neurochemical effects of sugar
This is saying bingeing occurs when someone hasn't had sugar for a while.
I have personally experienced this in the past.
When I followed a low carb diet, I went nutty when presented with sugary foods.
A bag of gummy bears didn't stand a chance.
I actually believe the problem is that your body becomes "thirsty" for glucose if you haven't had sugar or carbs for a while.
Glucose is the body's preferred energy source.
You can try the ketogenic diet of "running on ketones" deal, but you have to jump through a lot of hoops to make that happen.
If you mess up and have a tiny bit of carbs?
Your body gets out of a ketogenic state.
I eat low fat most of the time and I lose fat without having to hit some special state.
For instance...
I will most likely have a higher fat and higher calorie day.
The cool thing is that tomorrow I'll be back on track.
Anyway...
Sugar isn't a big deal.
- All carbs get broken down to glucose to be used for energy.
- Sugar simply gets broken down faster than complex carbs.
Any glucose from carbs or sugar that isn't used for energy get stored as glycogen in your muscle cells for future use.
In the rare instance that your muscle cells are full of glycogen...
This can get stored as fat.
This typically doesn't happen to a large extent.
Whole foods ARE a better choice.
There are nutrients in fruit and vegetables that are missing in Sour Patch Kids.
Candy is also more calorie-dense than most natural foods.
Eating mainly whole foods will serve you best long-term but...
An occasional sugary treat is good for the soul.
Sugar certainly didn't CAUSE Covid-19.
This stuff drives me nuts.
I do like to have fun with this.
I've been advertising a little slideshow article online about sugar.
I advertise using a platform called Taboola, which means this article will be on Msn.com and other large sites.
...but more importantly it gets a different message out there about sugar.
