Maintain Muscle While Focusing on Cardio

My personal goal for 2024 is to really focus hard on Zone 2 cardio.

I've been hitting it hard since right after february 2024

After just one month I can feel the difference.

I'm now much warmer throughout the day. For the past few years, I've been getting a bit cold.

I have always been naturally warm.

For me, the warmer I feel, the easier it is to get and stay lean.

So this is a good sign.

I've been doing the "The 6 Day Workout Template" from my ebook course on fat loss

This is 6 days of lifting strategically to maximize fat loss per week.

Basically, half your body in one workout and half in the other.

This gives me more time for Zone 2 cardio.

So this is what I'm thinking.

  • Mon: Weight lifting + Zone 2 cardio
  • Tues: Weight lifting + Zone 2 cardio
  • Wed: Weight lifting + Zone 2 cardio
  • Thu: Weight lifting + Zone 2 cardio
  • Fri: Weight lifting + Zone 2 cardio
  • Sat: Weight lifting + Zone 2 cardio
  • Sun: Off

I realize this A LOT of time spent training (8 hours plus of weightlifting + cardio per week).

My plan is to hit it this hard just up until August 2024

The goal is to see if I can train my metabolism to feel like it did when I was in my 20s and early 30s.

I will also include some HIIT cardio on the machines.

I'm thinking the last 10-15 minutes of a 90-minute Zone 2 session can be HIIT about twice per week.

I did this yesterday, and it worked well.

Finally, let's discuss the subject line of this email...

Will you be able to maintain muscle with this much cardio?

The way to prevent muscle loss is to strength train.

Don't go super light with high reps.

Do some work in the 3-5 rep range as outlined in my ebook.

I think people worry too much about losing muscle.

With this much cardio, it's likely that you will lose a touch of muscle volume.

But getting that back is super easy.

As soon as you cut back a bit on cardio and add more sets and reps and workout frequency, that muscle volume comes back quickly.

I think making fat loss a priority is smart if you have a lot of fat to lose.

I also think optimizing your metabolism will make getting and staying lean so much easier.

One last thing...

There have been several times I have been doing 90 minutes of Zone 2 cardio, and my mind tries to rationalize stopping at 60 minutes.

My mind comes up with several reasons.

Expect this to happen.

Ignore this and keep pushing.
